The Future of Reading in the Digital Age: From Print to Screen and Beyond

Reading has undergone significant transformation with the rapid development of digital technologies. For centuries, printed books served as the primary medium through which individuals accessed knowledge, literature, education, and cultural memory. The emergence of computers, smartphones, tablets, e-books, digital libraries, social media, and artificial intelligence has expanded the possibilities of reading beyond the conventional printed page. The transition from print to screen has not merely changed the physical form of texts; it has also influenced reading habits, attention patterns, comprehension processes, accessibility, and the ways readers interact with information. This article examines the changing nature of reading in the digital age and explores emerging trends that may shape the future of reading. It discusses the advantages and limitations of digital reading, hyper textual and multimodal texts, mobile reading, artificial intelligence, personalized reading environments, immersive technologies, and the continuing relevance of print. The article argues that the future of reading is unlikely to involve the complete replacement of print by digital media. Instead, it is likely to develop as a multimodal ecosystem in which print, digital, interactive, and AI-supported forms coexist. The future reader will therefore require not only conventional literacy but also digital, critical, multimodal, and AI literacy.
